Dear PINK’s

Valentina Tereshkova – Hero of Soviet Union and My Personal Hero – one of the coolest girls ever – first woman cosmonaut: orbited the earth 48 times aboard spacecraft Vostok 6 and spent almost three days in space. With a single flight, she logged more flight time than the combined times of all American astronauts to that date. The launch took place on 16 June 1963. Valentina was 26 y.o. then.

TOTAL PINK MESS

Jack Lemmon in The Best Cake Fight EverThe Great Race by Blake Edwards, 1965

Dear PINK’s

Cake Faith is always fun specially if arranged by Blake Edwards 😀 Although Pink Panther was a big thing in Europe I have impression that his comedies never reach here, in the old world, the fame they deserve, possibly because of strong competition of french comedy geniuses like Luis de Funes 🙂 Anyway, I had really hard weekend and The Big Blake again saved my Life. His sense of humor is simple but great, aesthetics are perfectly exaggerated, characters are funny and the whole thing has a lot of charm – something pretty much lost in the contemporary comedy. Henry Mancini needs no recommendation I guess. For those who know only Pink Panther series I would strongly recommend The Party (Peter Sellers at his Peak) and The Great Race – both movies are the finest of slapstick comedy genre – true Crème de la Crème 😀

PINK GLOVES

– Pola, mogę sfotografować twoje rękawiczki? – Proszę. Wszyscy je chcą fotografować.

– Pola. Can I take a picture of your gloves? – Sure. Everybody wants to do it.

Pink Gloves, MG, 2008

Dear PINK’s

No chyba, że sportowiec.

PINK GROOM

Pink Groom, 2008 by Locaburg (Mark Alor Powell)

Dear PINK’s

From 25th to 28th I was planning to go to Veracruz for a cousin wedding but I didn’t – the bloody flu kept me in the bed 🙁 I must to admit that I like Veracruz pretty much – the beaches maybe arent’t the greatest in Mexico but general vibe is: the weather is gentle, the people are nice – elegant man and slim woman, tropical flowers, good coffee, night dancing on the plazas, soon The Great Carnival… how one can ask for more specially a pour European devil like me that keeps the nasty echo of gray polish winter under his skull. So, yeah, I was counting on some pink this days but It didn’t happened – well I have enough of my internal pinkness and here comes a small sample of Veracruzean Wedding Pink seen trough Mark Powell’s sharp eye: The Pink Groom from the beach weeding (the igloo like setting is the hotel room – I was about to go exactly there) – check him out and ask yourself how The Pink suits you for this New Years Eve 🙂

BITTER PINK

tarapaty (trouble)
by Aleksandra Waliszewska

Dear PINK’s

Today I would like to point your attention on the new paintings of Aleksandra Waliszewszka. Some years ago this extremely sensitive girl let herself know to the public from “Italian” alike oils and as she have pretty much isolationist attitude on contemporary art scene probably reminds in the conscience of those who seen her previous work as “classical female painter”. Waliszewska has totally different and violently fertile period in her work right now – I am stating that not because of my sympathy to this naughty girl (I know her since she was 12 y.o.) but because I am truly moved by her recent pieces. I must to admit that I was lately often hard on her accusing her of being too “Darger-ish” and not taking clear posture in reference to it but this is because when I see something that really happens, my criteria rises: the more I perceive the more I demand. At Waliszewska recent paintings you will see pretty obscure bestiarium with a lot of iconographical references to various periods of art history and only slight shadows of pink in it – more twisted sexuality and sensitive perversion than happiness in any case but definitely something worth attention. If you are interested in the invisible beat of culture and want to know more of contemporary polish painting (different than that what in spite of its unquestionable quality begins to be main stream) check her flicker site.

DARKSEA PINK by FLOSHIP

Riding in darksea
part of Darksea chapter by Floship

Dear PINK’s

I am on Mexican Caribbean right now and proximity of coral reef reminded me of Floship illustrations that I find on flicker almost a year ago. As I wrote in my first comment to them they bring to my mind Haeckel, O’Keeffe & Max Ernst at once still retaining its very particular character. I admire the way Gerry Wong is able to create his own universe and even that the references to Asiatic “taste” can be find in his drawings he is not at all falling for so tempting but so obvious post-Murakami (post-manga) and post – urban vinyl contemporary vector illustration style. Discovering them gave me a lot of pleasure and satisfaction specially that I find contemporary children illustration a bit stuck between Disney clones (with all its highlights and shadows) and sensitive infantile minimalism (like Maisy etc.) The new American wave of animation (Tartakovsky, McCracken) and Japanese manga are another alternative but although I am hardcore fan of both again they are more contemporary canon that surprise today. For someone who, like me, grew up on Jan Marcin Szancer* and Zbigniew Rychlicki** fantastic creations the consciousness that this is a fertile zone is obvious. Although experimental illustration in polish school went at some point to certain dead ends (I mean drawings that are more satisfactory for parents educated in modern aesthetics than for children) I am sure that this is a space where creators can let they imagination run wild – specially that they “tiny” public is totally open-minded, ready to receive fantasy and has no doubts about existence of the strangest paradises. Floship proves that there is a lot of pink potential to explore in children fantasy universe, much more than Barbie and Pony people commonly use to associate with it. I recommended him to Zuza Ziomecka who short time ago started her new project “Gaga – magazine about beautiful childhood” – I hope that this peculiar life style alike mag for parents can develop towards being show space for such phenomena 🙂

* Cover of “Trough Pink Glass” would be a proper image to post here but Szancer is huge starting from drawings for Tuwim’s “Lokomotywa” and ending on illustrations for Jan Brzechwa “Pan Kleks” that simply cannot be replaced by anything.

** Again an illustratinon giant – for me specially important becouse of his drawings for polish editions of L. Frank Baum Oz books.
